Cayman Islands Marks World Tsunami Awareness Day

5 November 2025 | | By: Public Relations Unit

As the Cayman Islands continues to support recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, Hazard Management Cayman Islands will mark World Tsunami Awareness Day on 5 November by emphasising the critical importance of tsunami preparedness and early warning systems.

This year’s World Tsunami Awareness Day will be observed under the theme, “Be Tsunami Ready: Invest in Tsunami Preparedness”. The Day shines a spotlight on building resilient communities through global effort to turn awareness into action. It also champions proactive preparedness, uniting governments, scientists, local leaders and the public to reduce tsunami risks together.

In commenting on the importance of the observation, Dani Coleman, Director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, stated, “While hurricanes understandably dominate our focus during this recovery period, we cannot afford to let our guard down against the full spectrum of threats facing our islands. World Tsunami Awareness Day serves as a critical reminder that comprehensive disaster preparedness, one that accounts for multiple hazard scenarios simultaneously is not optional but essential to safeguarding our community and building true resilience.

Early warning signs and early action are effective tools to protect people, save lives and prevent the hazard from becoming a disaster.

Natural Warning Signs:

  • The sea pulling back from the shore
  • A sudden rise in sea levels
  • A loud roar coming from the sea

Response to these Signs:

On Land: Move immediately to upper floors of concrete buildings or to higher ground. Stay in your safe, elevated spot until an all-clear is given by officials.

At Sea: If you are already in a boat, proceed to deep water immediately.

To ensure Civil Servants are equipped with essential tsunami preparedness knowledge, Hazard Management Cayman Islands hosted a drop-in information session for civil servants. The session sought to raise awareness about the signs of tsunami, response protocols, and the role of civil servants in community preparedness.
