Mr. Gene Hydes was appointed to the post of Head of Inspections on January 1, 2015. He is the longest-serving member of the Department of Labour and Pensions, prior to which he was with the Department of Employment Relations (DER) and also worked in the first Labour Department under Mr. Dale Banks. Prior to assuming the role of Head of Inspections, Mr. Hydes was a Senior Labour Officer

Mr. Hydes holds an impressive host of professional certifications and designations in various aspects of occupational safety and health. In November 2014, he obtained a series of certificates from the OSH Academy in: Occupational Safety and Health Supervision, Specialist, Management, and Professional, as well as Safety & Health Committee Team Member and Leader. In addition, he holds several certifications form both the National Association of Safety Professionals and the International Association of Safety Professionals. HOI Hydes has also completed Project Management courses. He has supported and served the Department, clients and community partners with leadership and training, and is a highly respected industry professional.

Mr. Hydes has continually sought to upskill himself in specialist subject areas and has received certifications as a HAZMAT Emergency Response Incident Commander and a Confined Space Entry-Specialist-Construction. In addition, he has achieved certifications in Risk Management, Preparing Workplaces for COVID-19, Human Resources Management, Principles of Occupational Safety and Health Management and is also trained in CPR/First Aid as well as being a Mental Health First Aider. He has also completed the ILM Level 3 Training. Mr. Hydes also holds membership with the International Association of Safety Professionals. In addition to his own learning, he constantly supports his team with attending training in order that they can also upskill themselves. HOI Hydes currently serves the DLP in additional roles as Facilities and Fleet Manager.

Mr. Hydes was the first recipient of the Director’s “Employee of the Month/Quarter” in 2013. There is evidence of his influence and achievement throughout the DLP office, and his Email sign-off highlights his commitment to Safety, Training and Inspections.
