District Sanitation/Surveillance


The District Sanitation/Surveillance section is one of the key components of the Department of Environmental Health (DEH). Activities under this section are performed by Environmental Health Officers (District) who are responsible for the vigilance, monitoring, inspections, surveillance and reinforcement of the Public Health Act and DEH guidelines. 

The Environmental Health Officers (District) identify and ensure that environmental related issues that may be prejudicial to health are prevented or addressed in a timely manner in order to ensure a safe environment in the Cayman Islands. The focus is prevention and also the adoption of measures to avoid any nuisance/condition that may be harmful to health as a result of activities in the following areas:

  • Auto garages/petrol service stations.
  • All schools (including day care and tertiary schools).
  • Collection of water/sewage samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Cosmetology industry which includes barber shops, beauty salons, tattoo parlors, and other health care centres.
  • Environmental health nuisances and pests.
  • Environmental health promotion and special projects.
  • Public sanitary facilities such as beaches and cemeteries.
  • Private dwellings and public buildings.
  • Retirement facilities, foster homes and other public institutions.
  • Recreational waters such as swimming pools and spas
  • Tourist accommodations such as hotels, condominiums, guest houses & tenement houses
